Sate Padang and Rica Cake

 

To be honest, I hate this food when I was a little girl, but after my mother made it at home the taste its really delicious and from that time till now, I love this food very much, especially with their crispy spicy crackers so yummy!.

Sate Padang is a spicy Indonesian beef satay from West Sumatera, often served with a tick, spicy sauce, and rice cake complements, is perfectly with its bold flavors. Follow me to the kitchen let's make this delicious food!

Sate Padang

Ingredients

* For the Satay:

  1. 500 grm beef (or beef tongue), cut into small cubes
  2. 2 tbsp cooking oil
  3. 10 skewers
* For the Spice Paste:

  1. 5 cloves garlic
  2. 5 shallots
  3. 3 candlenuts (or substitute with macadamia nuts)
  4. 1 thumb-sized piece of ginger
  5. 1 thumb-sized piece of galangal
  6. 1 lemongrass stalk (use the white part only)
  7. 4-5 red chilies (adjust for spice level)
* For the Sauce
  1. 2 cups beef broth
  2. 1 tbsp rice flour (for thickening)
  3. 2 tbsp turmeric powder
  4. 2 kaffir lime leaves
  5. Salt to taste

Instructions:

Prepare the Satay: 
  • Grind the spice paste ingredients in a blender until smooth. Sauté the paste in hot oil until fragrant.
  • Add beef cubes to the pan and cook with the spice paste for about 5 minutes. Pour in the beef broth and simmer for 30 minutes until the beef is tender.
Prepare the Sauce:
  • Strain the beef and set it aside. Reserve the broth
  • In a separate pot, mix rice flour, turmeric powder, and a bit of water to make a paste
  • Add the beef broth, lime leaves, and salt. Stir until the sauce thickens.

Grill the Satay:
  • Thread the cooked beef onto skewers
  • Grill or pan-fry until slightly charred
  • Serve with the sauce pored over the skewers

Rica Cake

Ingredients:

  1. 250 gram cassava, grated
  2. 100 gram grated coconut (fresh or desiccated)
  3. 3 red bird's eye chilies, finely chopped
  4. 1 tsp salt
  5. 1 tsp sugar
  6. Banana leaves for wrapping

Instructions:

Prepare the Mixture:

  • In a large bowl, combine  grated cassava, grated coconut, chopped chilies, salt, and mix well

Wrap in Banana Leaves:

  • Take a small portion of the cassava mixture, shape it into a small flat cake, and wrap it with banana leaves.

Steam the rice Rica Cakes

  • Steam for about 30-40 minutes or until the cakes are cooked through.

Serve:

  • Place the Rica cakes alongside the Sate Padang, if you don't like cassava cake, you can eat it with with rice too. Enjoy this spicy and savory combination!
